Do I need a referral?
Yes. A referral from your family physician or nurse practitioner is required before an appointment can be arranged at the Komer Brain Science Institute.
Does every concussion require specialized assessment?
No. Many people recover completely. A specialized assessment may be appropriate when symptoms persist or interfere with daily activities.
I never lost consciousness. Could I still have had a concussion?
Yes. Many concussions occur without loss of consciousness.
My concussion happened months ago. Can I still be assessed?
Yes. Persistent symptoms may warrant further assessment after discussion with your healthcare provider.
What happens during my first appointment?
Your injury history, symptoms, medical history, previous treatments, recovery progress, and goals are reviewed. Additional assessment may be recommended when appropriate.
Will everyone need laboratory testing?
No. Testing is recommended only when clinically appropriate.
Does every patient require hormone testing?
No. Hormone assessment is considered only when symptoms and medical history indicate it may be helpful.
Can concussion affect mood?
Yes. Anxiety, depression, irritability, and other emotional changes may occur and deserve appropriate assessment.
Can concussion affect sleep?
Yes. Sleep disturbance is common and may contribute to fatigue and cognitive symptoms.
Will I recover?
Every recovery is different. Our goal is to identify contributing factors and develop an individualized plan.
Can I continue working?
It depends on your symptoms, your job, and your healthcare provider's recommendations.
Can I return to sports?
Return to sport should follow appropriate medical guidance and be individualized.
Why does the Institute take a whole-person approach?
Persistent symptoms may involve multiple body systems including brain function, sleep, hormone health, nutrition, vision, balance, physical conditioning, emotional well-being, and general medical health.
